The education of experts in the field of informatics and information technologies (IIT) has a long-standing tradition at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
From the early 1960s until 1994, the education of computer scientists was provided by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava (EF SVŠT). The Computer Center was established here in 1962, and in the following year, the operation of the first computer at universities in the Czechoslovak Republic—Ural 2—began. On April 1, 1964, the Department of Mathematical Machines was founded. During this period, studies in the field of IIT were conducted within the degree program of Technical Cybernetics, specializing in Mathematical Machines. It was a 5-year program, and the curricula for the first two years at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering were identical for all fields of study.
By the Government Resolution of the SSR No. 117 of April 11, 1973, a new field of study, Electronic Computers, was established. On September 1, 1973, the Department of Mathematical Machines was divided into the Department of Computers and the Department of Cybernetics, the latter having university-wide competence. In the academic year 1977/78, the first comprehensive restructuring of the curriculum took place, which unified the fields of study at faculties of electrical engineering nationwide within the ČSSR. On October 1, 1978, the Computing Center was separated from the Department of Computers, forming the university-wide Computing Center (Centrum výpočtovej techniky).
In the academic year 1990/91, the second restructuring of the curriculum took place. Following the adoption of the Higher Education Act No. 172/1990 Coll., the field of Informatics was created, with specializations in Software Engineering and Computer Technology, and Telecommunications. Concurrently, postgraduate doctoral studies were established, replacing the previous scientific aspirancy (vedecká ašpirantúra). The Faculty of Electrical Engineering (EF) was granted the authority to educate doctoral students in postgraduate studies in the following IIT fields: Applied Informatics, Software and Information Systems, and Computer Tools and Systems. On April 1, 1991, SVŠT was renamed to STU – Slovak University of Technology, and the Department of Computers was renamed to the Department of Informatics and Computer Technology. Name changes also affected the Faculty of Electrical Engineering; since November 1, 1994, it has been named the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (FEI).
Starting from the academic year 1993/94, a credit system and a two-tier study structure were introduced at FEI. The first tier—Bachelor's studies—had a nominal duration of 8 semesters, and its graduates were awarded the Bachelor's degree (Bc.). The second tier—Engineering studies—had a nominal duration of 3 semesters, with one semester dedicated to the preparation and defense of the Master's thesis, and its graduates received the Engineer's degree (Ing.).
In 1999, the Informatics field of study received accreditation from the international professional organization IEE, based in London. For students enrolling in the academic years 1997/98 to 2001/02, according to the decision of the accreditation committee of this professional society, the Bachelor's degree (Bc.) is awarded at the level of the British BEng., and the Engineer's degree (Ing.) (after obtaining the Bc.) is at the level of the British MEng. As a result, the education attained by the faculty's graduates is recognized in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and other countries. The accreditation was extended for an additional 3 years in 2001.
An independent Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies (FIIT) was established on October 1, 2003. The foundation for FIIT STU was formed by the Department of Informatics and Computer Technology of FEI STU. It was tasked with providing education for experts in the field of informatics and information technologies across all three levels of study (Bachelor's, Engineering/Master's, and Doctoral) as well as conducting scientific research in the field of informatics and information technologies.
From the original elective blocks in the Informatics field of study, two Bachelor's study programs (Computer Systems and Networks, Informatics), three Engineering study programs (Computer Systems and Networks, Software Engineering, Information Systems), and four Doctoral study programs (Computer Systems and Networks, Software Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Informatics) were created. At the same time, the structure transitioned to a three-year Bachelor's program and a two-year Engineering program. Full-time doctoral studies remained three years long, while part-time studies remained five years long. The organization of studies is reflected in the faculty's structure, which consists of three institutes: the Institute of Applied Informatics, the Institute of Informatics and Software Engineering, and the Institute of Computer Systems and Networks.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Allow me, in my speech on the occasion of the opening of the new Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies, to delve into the more distant past and the historical circumstances since the very beginnings of the utilization and development of computing technology in Slovakia. It was within this environment that the study programs, the field, and the research dedicated to informatics emerged and gradually evolved into their current form. In this address, I will focus on the historical milestones in the development of Informatics and computer technology, and characterize this development up to the present day.
The beginnings of the development of teaching the fundamentals and theory of digital devices, computing systems, and computer technology at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava date back to the late 1950s, when the Department of Automation and Regulation was established at the faculty on September 1, 1959, followed later by the Technical Cybernetics field of study, both led by Prof. Miroslav Šalamon. It was precisely the lectures on selected chapters of computer technology in the two-semester postgraduate program in 1960, which was dedicated to automation technology, and especially the lectures in the first specialized run of the postgraduate study of mathematical machines, where Dr. František Svoboda lectured. He was a member of the Prague school of computer science and technology led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonín Svoboda, which developed the SAPO computer and later EPOS, achieving significant success in computer science and engineering. During this period, we prepared an order for the URAL2 vacuum-tube computer at the faculty, and subsequently, in 1962, an independent unit, the Computer Center, was established as the first workplace of its kind, operating the first first-generation URAL2 computer in Slovakia, which was the most powerful computer in Czechoslovakia at the time. Prof. Ladislav Gvozdják, who had previously been involved in the development of radio electronics at the faculty and in Slovakia, was entrusted with the preparation and management of the Computer Center.
From the Computer Center, on April 24, 1964, under the leadership of Prof. Gvozdják, the Department of Mathematical Machines was formed as the first independent specialized department at universities in the entire former Czechoslovak Republic focused on computers and computing systems. It was gradually equipped with Minsk22, MSP-2A, LGP 30, and Minsk32 computers, a powerful AP3 analog computer, and small analog computing equipment for pedagogical purposes. The department had around 50 staff members. In addition to solving diverse practical tasks in the initial applications of computers, disseminating knowledge from this new field, and conducting scientific research aimed at improving the hardware and software resources of the digital and analog devices of the time and the automation of programming, it developed and provided the courses Programming and Fundamentals of Automatic Computers for all students of the faculty from 1967 to 1973, along with several specialized courses and the supervision of Master's theses in the Technical Cybernetics field of study. Within this field, a specific specialization in Mathematical Machines was created at the beginning of the academic year 1970/71. As far as I remember, the Department of Mathematical Machines had to put in a great deal of effort to achieve the creation of this specialization; it was born with considerable difficulty. At that time, Prof. Ľudovít Molnár, who stood at the inception of teaching and research in software systems, along with Prof. Pavol Horváth and other personalities (Ing. Ladislav Odstrčil, Assoc. Prof. Alexander Haas, Assoc. Prof. Ružena Apalovičová, RNDr. Valéria Sirotová-Šimáková, and Ing. Ján Borsuk), began their scientific and pedagogical careers at the department. They later actively contributed to teaching in the Electronic Computers field of study. Several members of the department later worked at the Department of Cybernetics and at various external institutions focused on the application of computer technology. Prof. Ivan Plander also started at the Department of Mathematical Machines as an external lecturer for the Analog Computers course.
From its pioneering position in computing technology, the department naturally became a generative workplace, supplying staff and initial expertise to newly emerging specialized institutions in Slovakia. Among the most important were the Computing Center of the United Nations Program and the Regional Computing Center of Universities in Bratislava, featuring a Siemens computer complex. Prof. Gvozdják became the external director of this center.
At that time, attention was also paid to modeling, simulation, and real-time process control by computers, as well as to the theory and methodology of digital device design, both in research and pedagogy at the Department of Automation and Regulation, specifically within the groups of Assoc. Prof. Štefan Neuschl and Prof. Norbert Frištacký. Interestingly, the Logic Circuits course began to be lectured here as early as 1963; it was the first specialized course in the systematic design of digital devices, for which the first lecture notes were prepared, followed later by the first national textbook for universities in Czechoslovakia. Research in this area was conducted in direct cooperation with the Křižík Karlín Research Institute in Prague.
The development of pedagogical and scientific activities at the Department of Mathematical Machines and also at the Department of Automation and Regulation led, thanks primarily to the efforts of Assoc. Prof. Neuschl, to the creation of a new field of study, Electronic Computers, at the faculty, and on September 1, 1973, to the establishment of the Department of Computers, tailored in content and structure to this field of study. Assoc. Prof. Neuschl was appointed head of the department. The establishment of this department took place against the backdrop of the split of the Department of Mathematical Machines into two new departments: the Department of Computers and the Department of Cybernetics, which had a broader scope led by Prof. Gvozdják. Assessing this development in retrospect, I personally believe that although the creation of the Department of Computers with its specific concept was clearly a positive step, the establishment of the Department of Cybernetics with a university-wide scope was not a fortunate solution. Time ultimately proved this to be true. During that period, I believe it was an attempt to manage scarce human resources, and it certainly did not contribute to the development of either pedagogy or research in the given field.
The Department of Computers took over the second-generation MINSK32 computer, the AP-3M analog computer, and possessed a third-generation EC 1021 computer of Czechoslovak manufacture. It thus operated with resources that, at the time, were more than modest compared to well-known universities in Western Europe. Upon its inception, the group of Prof. Norbert Frištacký joined the department, consisting of later-appointed associate professors Jozef Hlavatý and Milan Kolesár. The department simultaneously operated the faculty's computing center, led by Prof. Pavol Horváth, the current director of the Computing Center at STU. This center subsequently became independent on October 1, 1978, forming the core of the university-wide Institute of Computing Technology.
In 1977, due to a temporary change of employment of the head of the department, Assoc. Prof. Neuschl, Prof. Norbert Frištacký was entrusted with the leadership and was later appointed head of the department. He held this position until 1990, when he was elected rector of SVŠT.
The concept of the new Electronic Computers field of study was created independently within the department and was based on a relatively tight integration of the two components involved in implementing computing processes and systems of a complete computing complex: structurally oriented hardware and software tools. It was based on the premise that a graduate of the 5-year Engineering program in this field should have the ability to understand and creatively, constructively solve information processing problems in both forms of implementation across all informatics hierarchical levels of computing processes and systems. Or, at the very least, when specializing in one area, they should be able to navigate the other well enough to cooperate successfully in a team at all levels of the information processing system, and to some extent understand its implementation within the electronic execution base. Concurrently, the instruction transitioned to an orientation toward third-generation computing systems, emphasizing all the attributes of this generation.
Graduates of the Electronic Computers program also provided fresh reinforcement for the department's staff and numerous scientific research and development institutions, as well as workplaces of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV), participating directly in the research, development, and production of computer technology equipment in Slovakia. Examples include the creation and production of the RPP-16 computing system, the first Slovak computer developed at the Institute of Technical Cybernetics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (ÚTK SAV), and the development and manufacturing of computers under the SMEP program at VÚVT in Žilina, and later the production of computers from this family at ZVT in Banská Bystrica. Several graduates went on to become associate professors and full professors at the Department of Informatics and Computer Technology at STU, as well as at departments of other universities in Slovakia.
According to the aforementioned concept, we prepared the curricula and detailed syllabi of individual courses, gradually introducing a series of new or updated courses into instruction covering program theory and design, system software, and operating systems, as well as the analysis and design of computer architectures, computer networks, and their components. Today I can state that even under the conditions in which we worked at the inception of the Department of Computers, which can at the very least be described as highly modest to poor, we managed to bring and elevate our scientific and pedagogical activity and its results to a relatively high level. This was recognized within the community of specialized departments at the time, as well as by communities of other departments from different fields in both Czechia and Slovakia. Departments covering the field of study or courses from the given expert domain, particularly in Slovakia, drew directly from our experience, knowledge, and results in science and education. I can also state that we were recognized by institutions with which we established contacts both at home and abroad, within the former Soviet bloc, but also in Western Europe, such as the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. This is evidenced by numerous invitations to lecture and guest stays abroad.
Such recognition allowed us to significantly and positively influence the content of the Electronic Computers field of study, which was otherwise being rigidly unified as part of an almost permanent "restructuring of studies" within the ČSSR.
The aforementioned state-enforced restructuring did create a certain platform for the exchange of opinions and experiences among the participating departments, which I consider a somewhat positive aspect, even though many of us who participated were truly exhausted by the constant battle to establish courses, allocation of hours, and a whole range of natural requirements. However, it prescribed a rigid, inflexible system characterized by literally forced courses, a system extending tightly even into the unification of scientific disciplines and the postgraduate research (aspirantúra) of the time. Such a system adjusted only with great difficulty to the needs of the catchment regions of universities, and particularly to the necessary and ultimately indispensable scientific and professional specialization. Yet, as it goes in life, in the end, the distinctions and uniqueness of individual personalities asserted themselves, at least partially, even within this inflexible system. This development led to the natural bypassing of the norms prescribed by the restructuring, but unfortunately, also to the creation of frequently redundant, separate interdisciplinary and track-specific studies. Overall, the so-called restructuring of studies had a strongly negative, and one might say hindering, impact on the development of our field.
At the beginning of the 1980s, based on years of teaching experience and the department's tradition, we independently prepared and smuggled into the nationwide, then-already-unified curricula and syllabi of the field of study a series of courses, namely: Compilers, Computability and Programming, Database Systems, Modeling and Simulation, Computer Architecture, Reliability and Diagnostics, and several other alternating courses that lay beyond the official national framework of the field. In 1984, we were teaching 21 specialized courses across various areas directly within our field of study and 7 courses in other programs.
From the late 1970s, qualitative changes gradually occurred in the equipment and usage of computing systems. Alongside the EC1021 computer, the department began working with SM-type minicomputers, clones of the SM3 and SM4. We built and began utilizing a terminal network connected to an SM-4/20 minicomputer, featuring SM-7202 terminals, although it must be said that operating them required substantial effort due to high failure rates. The Experimental Laboratory of Microprocessor Systems was established and built within the department, featuring a development design system for microcomputers from Texas Instruments and later the first IBM PC/XT personal computer directly from IBM. These qualitative changes in the department's equipment played a significantly positive role in the advancement of instruction within the field of study, both in lectures and particularly in laboratory sessions. The laboratory greatly facilitated gaining experience with microcomputers, which was reflected in teaching, professional activities, and microcomputer research at the department, and I believe, across the entire faculty. Interactive access to the computer via the terminal network and hands-on work with microcomputers represented a certain breakthrough in teaching methodology for lectures and especially practical exercises, as well as for Student Scientific Activity (ŠVOČ) projects, Master's theses, and scientific-pedagogical work in general. In these years, a structure was formed within the department consisting of the divisions of Hardware Resources, Software Resources, and the Organization of Technical and Computing Resources.
Starting from the academic year 1982/83, we introduced elective alternative courses in the 5th year of the Electronic Computers field of study, focusing on artificial intelligence, microcomputers, and computer graphics systems; in subsequent years, we expanded these into six elective specialized courses. This action marked another qualitative leap in the instruction of the program. During these years, the department also drafted the proposal and subsequent implementation of the interdisciplinary Biokybernetika program under the chairmanship of Assoc. Prof. Neuschl, and, in cooperation with the Department of Microelectronics, the group study program Integrated Circuit Design, chaired on the part of the Department of Computers by Prof. Frištacký.
On this occasion, it should be mentioned that alongside our own field of study, we conducted lectures and exercises in other fields on topics such as Logic Circuits, Logical Process Control, Computers in Telecommunication Systems, Computer-Aided Modeling and Device Design, among others. Furthermore, since 1973, we managed several postgraduate study programs of the time, lasting up to two years, some of which were repeated multiple times. Most courses within the field of study, as well as the postgraduate programs, were covered by lecture notes and our own published textbooks. Significant contributions to the development of the Electronic Computers field originated from the scientific research activities of the department's groups and staff in basic and applied research, resulting in a relatively large number of publications of all kinds in informatics and computer technology, as well as several implemented projects. Staff members Prof. Molnár, Prof. Frištacký, and Prof. Šafařík also participated in the work of the CMEA (RVHP) expert commissions established for the Small Computer Systems (SMEP) project and their networks.
From 1970 to 1990, the staff of the Department of Computers published more than 615 articles and obtained 9 patents. As a result of scientific research in both basic and applied fields, 19 Candidate dissertations (CSc.), one Doctor of Science (DrSc.) dissertation, and 74 peer-reviewed research reports were completed at the department since 1970. Basic research in the 1970s and 1980s concentrated primarily on software synthesis methods, modeling and simulation methods and tools, artificial intelligence tools, design, diagnostics, and testing of digital systems, and logical process control.
Among the publications since 1970, one can find 15 monographs and several high school textbooks authored or co-authored by members of the department. Some of these books received awards from the Slovak Literary Fund, the Czech Technical Matice, and various publishing houses. {To mention the most significant among those published as university textbooks: Programming for Digital Computers (ALFA 1977), Logic Processors (SNTL 1981), Logic Systems (ALFA, SNTL 1986, 1990), Computers and Programming (ALFA, SNTL 1985), Programming in the Pascal Language (ALFA, SNTL 1987), Grammars and Languages (ALFA, SNTL 1987), Modeling and Simulation (ALFA, SNTL 1988), as well as the prepared textbook-monograph Digital Computers, published by ALFA in 1993.} The department's staff wrote a total of 108 volumes of lecture notes for the field of study and former postgraduate programs. The department provided expert guidance for and organized several scientific conferences, including "Computers" in 1984, 1987, and 1989, and "Microsystem" in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, and 1992. In the 1980s, it actively cooperated directly and contributed to the execution of international summer schools on Computers as a Subject and Tool of Instruction at Universities.
Within the environment of the department, several scientific and pedagogical figures emerged who became recognized not only in the states of the former ČSFR but also abroad. Two full professors were appointed at the department (Ľudovít Molnár, Norbert Frištacký), and associate professors (docenti) Štefan Neuschl, Jozef Hlavatý, Milan Kolesár, Pavol Návrat, Jiří Šafařík, Ladislav Hudec, Ľubomír Harach, Ivan Burger Jr., Margareta Kotočová, Ružena Apalovičová, Jana Minárová, František Zboray, Vladimír Vojtek, Tibor Krajčovič, Mária Bieliková, Pavel Čičák, Martin Šperka, and Alexander Haas were either appointed or completed their habilitation. Among them, Pavol Návrat, Jiří Šafařík, Milan Kolesár, and Vladimír Vojtek are full professors today.
The year 1989 launched a new, particularly significant period. The year 1990 can be considered a major milestone in the evolution of the department and the field of study. Access to information, and especially direct contacts with universities and other institutions in the European Union and other developed countries, substantially improved for the department's staff and scientific aspirants at the time. In 1990, Prof. Frištacký was elected rector of SVŠT and Prof. Molnár was elected dean of the faculty. The transformation of studies began at the faculty; in 1991, the Informatics field of study was established with specializations in Software Engineering and Computer Technology, and Telecommunications. The Department of Telecommunications also began participating in the management of the field of study. The concept and content of the degree program were redesigned, integrating disciplines from the area of telecommunications. The Department of Computers was renamed to the Department of Informatics and Computer Technology, and the faculty began using the name Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The program granted students substantially greater freedom in choosing courses. However, with the growing scope of informatics, this approach did not take into account the emergence of its individual sub-disciplines. This realization led to the restructuring of the field into elective blocks oriented toward Software Engineering, Computer Systems and Networks, and Telecommunications.
Another historical milestone for the program was the academic year 1994/95, when we transitioned to a two-tier credit system of study featuring Bachelor's and Engineering levels. The creation of this system gradually led to an inevitable reconstruction of the field of study, particularly toward ensuring independent student work across various types of projects, including team projects. Some modifications were also motivated by the successful accreditation of the Informatics field of study by the international organization IEE, which conducts accreditations outside the United Kingdom as well. Since 1999, the Bachelor's degree (Bc.) has been awarded at the level of the British BEng., and the Engineer's degree (Ing.) at the level of the MEng., thereby recognizing the education attained by the faculty's graduates in developed European countries, the USA, New Zealand, and Australia. The original accreditation, valid until the academic year 2001/02, was extended in 2001. The department contributed significantly to the introduction of studies in the English language, and its staff members remain active in it today. Likewise, the department's staff still guarantee the BEST Summer School courses, which are attended by students from many European universities. While in the past, students won leading positions in national ŠVOČ competitions with works created at the department, today they receive awards from international global conferences and competitions. These notably include awards from the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, and especially two fourth-place finishes and one third-place finish in the worldwide International Design Competition organized by the IEEE Computer Society since 2000. Assoc. Prof. Mária Bieliková and Assoc. Prof. Tibor Krajčovič deserve significant credit for leading the CS IEEE competition efforts.
In the field of scientific cooperation, alongside partner departments and other prominent scientific and professional workplaces in both the public and private sectors in Slovakia and Czechia, the department maintains very close contacts with many universities in Europe. The department guarantees the operation of the regional center of the CISCO Academy. Through these contacts, it was possible to gradually improve the department's material equipment, including the departmental computer network built shortly after 1990.
Despite a relatively serious shortage of departmental staff in past years, scientific activity developed remarkably. Members of the department received several awards from domestic and foreign institutions. The year 1997 became particularly significant when the IEEE Computer Society awarded Prof. Frištacký the title of Computer Pioneer and the accompanying Charles Babbage medal for his lifelong work in informatics and computer technology. Prof. Molnár was elected chairman of the UNESCO Education Committee, and Prof. Návrat currently serves as the chairman of the Accreditation Commission of the Government of the Slovak Republic. After 1989, the department's staff secured 20 national grants and participated in international projects within the TEMPUS, UNESCO, COPERNICUS, CEEPUS, and PHARE programs. Since 1990, they have written 23 textbooks and lecture notes, published 162 articles in domestic and foreign scientific and professional journals, presented 392 contributions at domestic and international conferences and seminars, and obtained one patent for an invention. The department's collective contributes as authors to the informatics topics of the unique Encyclopaedia Beliana. Thirteen doctoral dissertations and seven associate professor habilitations have been defended.
The commitment of the department's staff to the further restructuring of studies into a three-year Bachelor's and a two-year Engineering program deserves special recognition. The staff participated decisively in creating the framework of informatics study programs and their associated documentation, ranging from Bachelor's to Doctoral levels. Currently, two Bachelor's study programs (Computer Systems and Networks, Informatics), three Engineering study programs (Computer Systems and Networks, Software Engineering, Information Systems), and four Doctoral study programs are already accredited.
In conclusion, allow me to present a few final thoughts. The period we went through, from the first seeds of the Electronic Computers field of study until 1989, was heavily marked by a disruption in the continuity of social and economic development and its uprooting from the European context. It was characterized by pervasive centralist and local dirigism, severe restrictions in personnel management, and massive international isolation in the fields of science and, in particular, technology from the rest of the world, where cutting-edge science and technology were predominantly born. This inevitably had a negative overall impact on our opportunities and development, especially in the specific field of science and technology we pursued, which experienced a truly dizzying evolution alongside electronics starting in the 1970s. For instance, during this period, we independently discovered a significant architecture at the department called SIPO (Single Instruction - Parallel Operation), known today as VLIW architecture and widely used especially in embedded systems, particularly on super-large System-on-Chip (SoC) integrated circuits. All the facts presented, and notably the results achieved, confirm the high professional standards of the department's current staff and provide a guarantee that at the new Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies, they will continue, as its core, to raise the bar for the quality of education and scientific research.
After 1989, we began to open up to the world and integrate especially into the European academic and scientific community, joining numerous international activities—such as international committees, working groups, and program committees of scientific conferences within organizations like IEEE, IEE, IFIP, and ACM (SIGMOD). True, the previous development, an overall inefficient economic growth, and the prolonged neglect of science and education confronted us, as well as other higher education institutions, with many hindering problems that are well known to all of us. Personally, I believe we will overcome them over time. In my view, if we do not want our universities to rank among the inferior ones in Europe, we must overcome them.
I believe that the development of the new faculty, which we are currently opening, will contribute significantly to expanding and modernizing the scope of programs, as well as to the depth of knowledge in the fields of science and technology so vital for the further development of Slovakia.
