The IET is a British Institution for engineering and technology, formed in March 2006 by the merger of the two institutions IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) and IIE (Institution of Incorporated Engineers).
The IET provides advice in all areas of engineering, regularly advises Parliament and other agencies. It has more than 156,000 members and technology professionals in 148 countries.
The IET publishes more than 100 new titles (books, journals) each year. Through the so-called technical networks, it organizes leading events and provides access to expertise in the field of engineering and technology.
It maintains an English bibliographic information service – IET Inspec – for scientific and technical literature.
The IET accredits study programs worldwide in subjects related to electrical, electronic, manufacturing, mechanical, systems and information engineering. It also funds professional development programs for engineering graduates, including scholarships, grants, and awards.
Under license from the Engineering Council, it awards the following professional qualifications:

- Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Over 1,300 higher education programs in the UK and many more around the world are accredited by the IET. Universities with such accredited programs include, for example, the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of Bristol, University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Macao Polytechnic University, Heriot-Watt University in Dubai, University of Malta.
The IET offers several categories of membership: Associate, Member (MIET), Technician Member (TMIET), Student, Apprentice, Fellow and others.
